Big boy room makeover
It’s time. In fact it’s long overdue. We’ve been in this house for almost two years and I’ve yet to find time to organize the kid’s closets. And believe me, they need it in a MAJOR way.
Let me start with my sweet Grant’s room. His big boy room needed extra TLC because in addition to be a cluttered mess in his closet and with his toys, I’ve also been putting off finishing decorating it. So I’ve got these two huge projects on my hands and it feels overwhelming. Enter Kim Salisbury of Home Method Co…she’s basically the Superwoman of organizing, minus the cape of course.
For reference I have to show you the before pics and I totally understand if you think I’m a hoarder. It’s definitely not pretty.
Kim took one look at Grant’s room and said, “No prob. We’ve got this!” So together we took a trip to Home Good (aka Disneyland for adults) to find some pieces not only to organize Grant’s room but also pull together his Surfer/Coastal room theme. Add in a beautiful rug from Ruggable and we are in business!
Most of the clutter in Grant’s closet was caused by clothes that didn’t fit him anymore OR that he had yet to grow into. Everything was just jumbled together and desperately needed a home. And let me just say that Kim’s love of “Rainbow Order” as a way to organize clothes has totally rubbed off me. Not only does it make my heart go pitter patter when I open up the closet, but it’s a quick and easy way to help pick out clothes in the morning too!
I feel so grateful to have a Kim’s help to finallllly pull together Grant’s big boy room. It’s organized and decluttered and most importantly Grant loves it. I mean he is over the moon excited about this space. And that makes my mama heart super happy. Click HERE for some Surfer/Coastal room inspo.
Thankfully Kim is sharing her Home Method Co pro tips to help all my busy mamas spark joy too!
When organizing their toys, keep it simple, especially for the younger ones. For Grant’s room, I chose a piece that was not only low enough for him to reach, but also had shelves for his books. The open bins at the bottom makes it easy for him to put his own toys away by just tossing them in.
In kid’s closets, try hanging their clothes in rainbow order. Not only does it look pretty, but it makes it much easier to find what you are looking for.
In their drawers, file folding is a must. When clothes are file folded, they can see exactly what they have. This trick makes getting dressed so much easier if you don’t have to dig down to the bottom of the drawer to find your favorite t-shirt!
Less is more. I know this one is tough. But believe me and my 10 plus years of experience as a Professional Organizer (and a mom of two) that it’s the truth! Kids don’t need nearly the amount of toys that they have. Let some go!
Make it a game: Set a timer for 5-10 minutes and give them a bag. Ask them to choose some toys, books, stuff they don’t play with or use anymore. Talk to them about how there are kids less fortunate than them, and that going to donate these things to those kids. I promise you, they will jump at the chance to de-clutter! Try it and see!
