Cheers to Beers

Cheers from the World Bistro Gardens

When I’m not hitting the road on the weekends, I always look for an adventure in my own backyard. I found the perfect getaway 30 minutes inland at the Stone Brewing Company in Escondido. I’d heard so much about this San Diego favorite that I had to see for myself what all the “buzz” was about. (No pun intended. Ok, fiiine. Pun intended.)

Stone is a beer lovers paradise. You can shop in their beer store, grab a taste of your favorite IPA from the bar or have a delicious meal at the Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens. Stone also offers tours and on weekends they’re just about every hour on the hour.  The best part…they are FREE and you get to sample beer at the end…for FREE. They are super popular so make sure to reserve your tour spot right away. To kill time before my tour, if you call it that, I sat outside in the warm San Diego sun for lunch. The grounds are surprisingly lush and green with gardens surrounding the main restaurant. The World Bistro menu is extensive. They serve up everything from comfort food to healthy, organic dishes-most with a beer twist! I loved everything I tried, especially the Beer Mac and Cheese! They also have dozens of beer on tap and of course I sampled a few. (They have wine as well, but c’mon-you’re at a Brewery!) I must recommend saving room for dessert. I went for the Arrogant Bastard Brownie. Delish!

Where the magic happens

Tour time! 20 new friends and I set off to see where the magic happens. Our witty tour guide showed us the nuts and bolts of the beer making process, starting with hops all the way to the fermentation. (To be honest, my retention of the brewing info towards the end of the tour was a bit fuzzy. What can I say they make a good product?) At the end of the 45-minute tour, you’re treated to guess what…more beer! Just to be fair, I sampled them all. Even though I’m usually a light beer drinker, I was pleasantly surprised that most of my favorites were dark! I had no idea I was wasting so much time all those years in college drinking “fizzy yellow” beer as my tour guide called it.

What a fun afternoon! I’d suggest hopping on one of the bus tours around town and heading to Stone with a big group of friends. I love their philosophy on brewing beer. Basically, two guys started the company because they wanted to make really delicious craft beer with top quality ingredients. It looks like they succeeded! Cheers to Stone Brewing Company!
